Short Imagery Essay for Jane Eyre
As you read, keep track of the images in the category you’ve been assigned. You will get together with the other members of your group once or twice before we finish reading the novel to compare notes. In your group, share the references you have collected so far for your images. Are they associated with certain types of experiences or situations? If your images are literal (red, white, water, moon & stars, windows, enclosure), look for instances in which they took on a symbolic meaning and decide what they symbolize. If you had protest, make a generalization about the sorts of things of conditions that Jane protests against or about the form her protests take. If you had dreams or pictures, make some generalizations about their content. Are the dreams and the drawings similar? Do they tie in with any of the other sorts of images you notices? Do the dreams occur at similar times in Jane’s life?

As you finish the book, keep these ideas in mind. Eventually you will write a summary (approx. 250-300 words) of your conclusions about how your images contribute to Jane Eyre’s theme. Explain what the images become symbolic of, and give several clear examples from the book to support your conclusion. This assignment is worth 100 points and is due without exception at the beginning of class on January 22nd. The content of what you write will become the topic of class discussion, so no late papers will be accepted.
