-What changes? The dog no longer comes to the restaurant.

-Why? The Frenchman threw the roll at the dog.

-In what way? After dog is hit with roll, it comes back twice. Why does Traven have dog come back twice?

-Dog accepts apology, but cannot get over it

-Coming back twice=shows that it is not a normal dog, like Frenchman expects

Finding central theme:

What changes?

-Siddhartha becomes enlightened

How does Siddhartha become enlightened?

-By listening to the river

-River says ohm; ohm= voices of everyone

(Remember: river is symbol)

-By hearing ohm, he overcomes suffering and realizes that he is like everyone else

-Govinda is enlightened through kissing Siddhartha; has epiphany (doesn’t go through same experiences as Siddhartha)

-epiphany=sudden knowledge or wisdom gained by intuitive means

Why does Hesse have Siddhartha change this way?

-Everything is everything else=theme

-If everything is Brahmin, then love everything

Siddhartha - as a character he is awakened - becomes confident?
Stew: Never is Siddhartha bona fide individual; the "didactic allegory" means that Siddhartha can never be a character - only a vehicle for symbolism.
"I have to lose myself to be myself" - Siddhartha is recognizing who he is and the reader is only watching Siddhartha watch himself.
Stew: He never is a character - he is only ever a symbol. Hesse is not very good at characterization.
"The end is the chief thing of all" - Literature is teleological; everything in the work is directed to the central theme. For Hesse, theme/symbol > character. For Hesse they are all archetypes.
Stewart lecture:
What is the nature of self? - 2 components: Atman - the "I" and the true "self".
Buddha: All is illusion - Atman: release the self to release oneself from suffering - not metaphysics, only ethics. No ego.
Denial of the senses=asceticism.
Ego makes all realize how the entirety of the world is simply a negation - that makes us feel alienated and sad.
The inner voice - methodology for finding true self. It is the authentic self.
Siddhartha - you cant listen to teachers; experience is incommunicable. You gain experience yourself. Words cannot confer experience as wisdom. Sid must experience things.
Siddhartha will almost lose the voice. People will try to heat it out of him.

Dameon - collective unconscious - if one person knows it, it is shared by the species.

Because the traitors advised Henry to use well-employed cruelty on the drunkard, he tells them he's going to use well-employed cruelty against his former friends
Henry uses the traitors' own council against them
See a theme of loyalty vs betrayal - when Henry is betrayed by his friends, is he betraying them by not showing them mercy?
Also private vs public man - as a friend he would show mercy, but as a king he cannot
Act 2 Scene 3:
Goes back to the bodyhouse(?) with Prince Hal's old drinking buddies
We find out that Falstaff dies of a "Broken heart" after being ignored and forgotten by Henry
Act 2 Scene 4:
King of France and his advisers plan their defense to Henry's army
Dauphin as a foil to Henry - when he describes him as a vain, giddy, humorous youth, he's really describing himself

-virtues should be taken in the mean too. In order to achieve happiness we must live in the mean but the mean varies from person to person.
-also there are many ways to take the mean and therefore many ways to become happy.

-once you use your reason to overcome the beck and call of passion regularly, after a while you'll just do it out of character rather than having to make a choice to do the right thing

-Aristotle agrees that ideus are the ultimate realities

-Plato does not explain why there is motion and why they

-Reality is the universal in the particular, we see instances of it and induce up to the universal

-He says if you take away the adjectives and ideus of something, nothing is left. The ideus and particulars are inseparable

-There are four main to everything in the universe

-Material: the thing (a desk)
