Possible theme ideas:

  • Hubris (excessive pride, belief that you're better than the gods), everyone in the myth gains excessive pride, goes too far, suffers consequences (people get punished for their hubris).
    • ex: Daedalus pushes nephew off Athena's temple because of jealousy, has hubris because he believes no one is better than him (thinks he's the most intelligent)
  • Know your place in society.
  • Self-surpassent. Throughout this myth all the people are trying to surpass themselves. ANTHROPOMORPHIC. 
  • Gods are an example for consequences, but it's one's own fault. 
FIRE REPRESENTS KNOWLEDGE. How do we surpass ourselves? By knowledge of ourselves.
  • Gods make you think that they are above consequences so that humans don't overcome them.
  • Gods are fictional, so consequences aren't because of gods.
  • hubris will always lead to downfall
  • hubris makes one forget their place with the gods and all suffer consequences
    • ex: Daedalus pushing Talos off the cliff pg 1 "his pride raced away with his wits"
    • ex: Pasiphae believing she is the most beautiful "Am I not more beautiful than Aphrodite?"
    • ex: Icarus telling Daedalus something he doesn't know "I can be up and back before he opens his eyes"
    • Minos: imprisons Pasiphae in the labyrinth because his pride has been injured
Why doesn't Talos die? Because he didn't have hubris, he gave credit to the gods, and he didn't get punished.

Honors 9 notes for 12/17: Daedalus

Daedalus –> wheel, plow, loom
Daedalus was very prideful, “His pride raced away with his wits.” (1)
Talos, gifted, was following in Daedalus’ footsteps, and was his nephew
Icarus “drunk on power,” when he risked his life to see the sun because he wanted to be the first to
Pacifay Queen of Crete was very prideful
Who is the voice of caution?
-Daedalus, wants to watch over boy but naps
-Icarus had heard many things about the sun and wanted to find out
-“How splendid if I could really get a good look and be able to tell my father something he doesn’t know.” (5)
-Icarus wants to surpass his father in knowledge
-As Zeus overthrew Cronos, Cronos overcomes Uranus
-This was an early form of psychology (myths)
-gods and humans have the same motivations and desires
-The god are projections of man to teach ethics and morals
-Icarus felt like a god when he was so far above everyone else
-prediction of Daedalus myth moral: do not challenge the gods. “The gods, being all-powerful, heeded a more subtle praise than obedience.” (1)
-everyone in the myth has excessive pride and suffers because of it
