Remember the existential concepts: commitment, alienation, integrity, nothingness
Remember that we will be writing an impromptu essay about how existential thinkers compare over an existential concept.
Dostoevsky and Tolstoy are opposites in tone
Dostoevsky was the Mark Twain of Russia
Alyosha is an Orthodox priest in training while Ivan is a college student
What is the big picture of the piece?
What happens when one confronts nothingness? It gives us freedom to be who we really are.
Hegel: "One must face death to achieve freedom"
Hegel thought that the course of history is towards the future of pure spirit.
Dostoevsky almost never corrected his work. Independently came up with three of four of Nietzsche's tenets
Crime and Punishment
The Underground Man by Ross Macdonald
"To develop character is to make the reader understand what is the motivation for why a character says/does/feels what they do"
Suffering is one of the things that defines humanity
Dostoevsky is really good with revealing the "hidden evils" of a character
Resentment: reciprocating the bad that has happened to oneself towards others
The Absurd is an existential concept beyond this class that talks about the simultaneous difficulty and desire to find meaning in the world
Ivan is trying to understand why God allows suffering.
Remember those Crash Course videos about the problem of evil I've talked about? They're still there if you're interested.

Bean Trees Discussion

Main theme: Freedom vs. Happiness
Ext Con. Questions: Can Taylor find a mother for Turtle? Can she get Esteban and Esperanza to a safe place?
Int. Con Question: Can Taylor
Immigration! (Build bridges not walls) (f*** Trump)

What is the story told to Esteban: You go to hell and it is the same room. Feeding. Helping each other be happy. (Mr. Stewart and the frozen french fry salesman. Big expectations-little happiness. little expectations-big happiness)
What is ironic about Esperanza’s name: Her name means hope ironic because she’s gone through so much (losing child, hiding because of immigration) Gives up hope when she tries to kill herself.
How did she lose he child: People came to her village and took the children. They know the names of everyone in the union. Child held as ransom for the names.
What are Esperanza’s feelings about how her child is still alive but will grow up under horrible people: Torn. Happy child is alive, but fears what her kid will turn into. Hopeless. Nothing she can do to get her back. Maybe it would be better for the kid to not be alive?
In what sense does Turtle have to take practically everything on faith: That she won’t be hurt again. Really bad childhood and Taylor keeps on telling her that she won’t be hurt again.
How does this idea relate to themes in the novel: Have to believe that things will be okay, otherwise there isn’t much of a point. Remain positive no matter what happens.
How does the abuse of power relate to Virgie May, Esperanza, Esteban, etc: (motif is a message that is not the central message) Lu Anne can never look nice enough. Look like the standards set by men. Dad is still always around. Esteban and Esperanza-people in power put rules in place and don’t see how it effects people. Sees life black and white (stereotypes) Virgie May is Lu Anne and Taylor’s blind neighbor. So is mrs. Parsons. Doesn’t understand what the immigrants have been through. Sticks to her own ways. (wears red)
What is the miracle of dog poop heart: Flowers come through dirt. Re birth. Good can come from bad situations.Flowers=hope. hope can come out of horrible situations.
What do you think the cactus bird symbolizes: Someone dealing with what they’re deals. Flowers in tires. Turtle had survived.
What do Turtle’s hidden scars symbolize: Her predetermined situation. Strength to push through and heal. You can’t know what someone has been through.
“I guess it makes us feel safe” how: If you don’t deserve bad things, then you can’t get hurt. Easy to justify wrong if you have privilege.
    “Cigarette burns” “telephone”
“Life can be hard in ways I never knew about”: Taylor. can’t believe what people in power can do. “It would be easier not to know” Ignorance is bliss. Guatemala in 80’s. (watch el Norte) El Salvador. Population rose up. Civil war against oligarchy. Nicaragua Sandinistas formed communist government. USA armed the contras. Secret wars. Ronald Reagan thought that there was a communist plot and that the people from El Salvador and Nicaragua were being aided by the Cubans. Mr. Stewart put on list to be investigated by US government. Body guard. It’s easier not to know. Better to inform yourself. “I was afraid to understand this”
“They just held her. These children are adopted. You picked the lives of 17 people over getting your daughter back” What would you do: Can’t even think about a world where that would be possible. We live in that world.
“my whole life had been running around on dumb luck and I hadn’t even noticed it”: Taylor. She has lived her whole life without knowing real pain. She didn’t realize how lucky and privileged she is.
Making tough decisions. The poem about dead deer. Mr. stewart and the sheep.
How are the bean trees a symbol: Bean trees go on faith and stick to things. Good triumphs over evil
Explain nutter school: Where the kids have to go so that they can buy new clothes. They have the smell on their hands. Tough decision and classism. Abuse of power. Crab bucket. They will stick out either way.Empathy for people being oppressed.
Dream angles. What was the trouble in the air: That someone was going to take them.
What was the empty despair: Has Taylor fought back? not really.

Bean Trees Discussion

Congrats on surviving the Boot Camp!

The book is interesting! Wow!
Protagonist-Taylor Rear
POV: 3rd person omniscient (kinda weird though)
Ext con: Can she escape from her life/crab bucket/herd mentality (the one to get away)
Ext. Antagonist: human nature (schadenfreude)
Int. Antagonist: Lack of self esteem
Theme: How you deal with what you’re dealt

What were the two things that the mom said that characterize Taylor: She always expected the best and would be hard on her.
“The most amazing thing was the way the child held on” What is the significance: Trying to stay with the crowd
“there were bruises and worse” What happened: She was molested (sexual abuse)
Why is chapter two called ‘new year’s pig’: She was born Jan. 1
“because he was a mexican” What does the narrator add that explains prejudice: She had never seen one before. Dehumanize as other, you don’t see someone as an individual, you see them as a ‘type’. It is human nature to be afraid of the unknown.
What is chapter 3 titled: Jesus is lord
Why do you think the narrative is a flashback: It makes is a detached autobiography (learns something)
How is it ironic that Taylor finds help at a tire shop: she was afraid of tires because a family got in an accident with tires/
is it interesting that flowers are growing in old tires: Yes to show that you can overcome fears. Relates to Turtle (persistence). Ms. Logan doesn’t like mexicans but she was mistaken.
What to purple bean vines symbolize: beautiful things can come from the unknown. Things can grow back. (relates to Turtle)
Who is Maddy: The owner
How is she similar to Taylor’s mom: Believes that taylor can do it despite fears.
In what way is Taylor’s adoption of Turtle thematic and significant: How you deal with what you’re dealt. Taylor learns to live with Turtle. Ironic because she wants to not get pregnant/have a child and leave Kentucky. Learns to like her life.
“Whatever you want the most is going to be the worst thing” how does that relate to Lu Anne: Like Oedipus. Perepatia
What was the type for water: The water that Lu Anne’s grandmother brought to baptize her
What is the symbolic significance of Angel pouring it down the drain: Lu Anne can’t be perfect. He is revoking ownership of the child.
Taylor has an interview with the ‘bean curd kids’ Describe their personality: Like people found in Eugene.
Why doesn’t she like Faye: Because she is better than her
What factors make Lu Anne and Taylor a good match: Both single mothers raised by single mothers from Kentucky. Have the same roots. Polar opposites. Taylor has too much confidence and Lu Anne doesn’t have any
Why is she afraid of the ice cube tray: Has been abused and the sound of the tray cracking is like being hit.
What new insights are given about Taylor’s feelings of men: Isn’t a fan. Feels uncomfortable.
What is next door to the tire store: An adult shop. He safe place is not completely safe.
Where is the door handle: Where her legs connect (the public school answer)

Live free or bust: Freedom vs. Happiness
